I have available to me an almost unlimited supply of old garage door openers (in a dumpster behind where I work).
Each one consists of a fairly powerful (1/4 to 1/2 HP) electric motor, and a control board to run it. Some of the controllers have radio receivers (for the remote), and you can get replacement remotes if you want to use them. The controllers a have a variety of useful parts on them like relays and microswitch limit switches and some standard through hole components. There are also useful machanical parts like gear trains and chain drive sprockets.
The same dumpster also collects lots of track, rollers, and the doors themselves.
If you are building a fairly simple mechanical device the control boards would be a great ready made solution for cheap motor control.
I have already taken a bunch of these. If anyone would like me to collect some for them they would just have to promise to retrieve them from me (so I am not forced to collect more!). It may take me a while to collect them if I get a lot of requests.
