motion sensor activated video

so, a couple friends and i are working on a crazy zany last minute video installation for a little show this weekend. i came up with a rather low fi way to trigger the dvd player we're using with a pir motion sensor so that when people walk by the video comes on. i know there's got to be a better, sleeker, more reliable way to do this but i've had trouble finding info online. so if you know of any resources that could help us look like the professionals we're not, let me know. thanks in advance! ~K

this might be too late but there is a toy sold by stores like thinkgeek.com and it is basically a set of lasers that act like an alarm for your cubicle.

so according to thinkgeek when a laser beem is broken an alarm is sounded, which is basically a switch. So modify this toy to turn on your DVD player, VCR etc.
no worries,
