Bandsaw needed for Burning Man project!
Reply Quote

Hey Makers,

I'm looking to connect with someone who could help me cut out a small block of metal for a design i made.  (im using the block to brand pendants for burning man necklaces so its important the block be able to withstand high temperatures)

Thinking a bandsaw that could cut out the figure would be the best but I don't have access to a bandsaw or know the best metal to use.

Anyone out there able to lend a hand?

Thanks!

N.

Some basic questions...
How big is the end result supposed to be?
What are you branding with it wood? leather? flesh? (ewww)

I think you can most likely get away with a flat shape cut out of sheet steel or brass.
The brass will get pretty soft if you repeatedly heat it much past red hot though.

The bands saw is good if it is a large thing and you can hold it while it is going through the saw.
If you have much detail you will have trouble since bandsaw blades are usually farily thick.

For hand work the better tool is a jewler's saw which is like a very fine coping saw.
You can probably get a saw and some blades at pearl paint or any good art store.
It take a while to learn to use so buy lots of blades (they are cheap, but very thin so they break a lot).

your other problem will be how to hold it when it is hot!

hope this helps.
